About Phinda Private Game Preserve

On May 6 we traveled to Bayete Tented Camp in the Phinda Private Game Reserve and enjoyed three full days of safari activities including daily guided interpretive game drives/walks in the early morning and afternoon. The afternoon activities began in the late afternoon and lasted until after dark, when spotlights were used for glimpses into the nocturnal bush life. In the early evenings we were treated to the “Sundowner”, a safari version of Happy Hour out in the bush.

Biologists without Borders in conjunction their sister organization, Wild Tomorrow Fund, conduct and support several research projects at Phinda. We were able participate in some of the research, and exciting highlights included fitting an elephant with a radio collar, helping with a bird banding project, and tracking the movements of collared hyena with Axel Hunnicutt, the reserves hyena expert. We also took walks in the unique sand forest where were able to catch a glimpse of the elusive suni antelope which is Africa’s second smallest antelope at only 14 inches high.
